Lake Pleasant, AZ --
Backing up his Friday night win at Manzanita Speedway, Kenny Hatfield wheeled his Jet Mod to a win Saturday night in the 20 lap IMCA Modified event as Canyon Raceway celebrated it's 18th birthday with a big six division show. Rick Ward ran second and Darren Williams battled his way through the pack to finish third. Anthony Madrid won the 20 lapper for the super stocks after point leader Doug Porter blew leading. The pure stock feature was increased to 20 laps and point leader Chris Carter led wire to wire for the win. In the 20 lapper for the Arizona Dwarf Cars, Peter Dozeman held off the challenges of Jesse Chinn for the win. In the mini stock 20 lapper, defending champion and current point leader Bill Moore Jr won with chief challenger Mark Dryer second. The Lady Stocks had a solid 12 car field and raced 12 laps with Susan Huneycutt posting her second straight victory. All of the divisions except for the visiting dwarf cars lined up their main events based on season points as no heat races were held.
The IMCA Modifieds had a 20 car turnout and point leader Darin Center led early from the pole in his Jet Mod as Ward and Hatfield settled into the 2-3 slots. Lap four saw a pair of cautions as spins by Joe Parmeley and Marvin Hart forced the yellow flags. Hatfield took second on lap 6 and the lead from Center on lap 7. At the midway point of the 20 lapper, Ward took second from Center and set his sights on leader Hatfield. With five laps to go, Darren Williams broke into third and he passed Ward for second on lap 18. Ward scrambled back with his Pro Chassis and retook second on lap 19. Hatfield's win was his 8th of the season at Canyon and he was followed by Ward, D Williams, Joe Warner, Center, Tony Miller, John Cornell and Mark Williams.
Super Stock point leader Doug Porter raced into the early lead in their 20 lapper, but the race was restarted when George Fronsman and Kenny Robinette tangled. Porter again raced in front with Rick Mills and Madrid into the 2-3 slots. Porter pitted his heavily smoking mount and Madrid took over with Mills and Troy Baney challenging. At the midway mark, Chris Huneycutt took third from Mills and the only caution came on lap 16 when Robinette spun. Madrid won with Mills second ahead of Huneycutt, Baney, Steve Bender, Joe Sarginger and John Crawford. Robinette was awarded a best appearing car award.
In the 20 lap Pure Stock race, point leader Carter led early over Rob Munoz and Andy Wheat. Despite a couple caution flags, it was Carter all the way with Munoz a race long second ahead of Wheat. Jay Rode was fourth ahead of Bryan Rorick, Glen Stumm and Kenny King.
Shawn Arnold led the opening lap of the 20 lap dwarf car main, but Dozeman took over on lap 2 and Steve Adams followed him into second. Jesse Chinn took over third on lap 8 and rookie Menthie Lighter spun and was hit hard by Tom Graham. Dozeman continued to lead Adams and Chinn, but lap 19 action saw both Chinn and Willy Grombach passing Adams for the 2-3 slots. Dozeman won ahead of Chinn, Grombach, Adams, Brad Hickson, Jerry Larrabee and Kevin Hickson. Adams was awarded a best appearing car award.
The mini stock feature was also 20 laps and it was slowed by just one caution on lap 9 when best appearing car award winner Gary Hadler caught fire and he pulled into the infield. Point leader Moore took the lead over Mark Dryer and Gene Povinelli. On numerous instants, Dryer was able to pull alongside Moore, but he could never pull off the pass. Povinelli was a late dropout and Danny Shaffer gained third. Moore won over Dryer, Shaffer, Ray Bramlet, Russ Clark, Brandon Jackson and Al Pinedo.
Bobbi Kayton led the first 4 laps of the 12 lap Lady Stock main before Rhonda Jones took over. Huneycutt passed Jones on lap 8 and won the 12 lapper with Jones making several runs at her. Kim Scarborough was third ahead of Kayton, Stacy Carter, Shirley Seaton and Julie Nelson.
