| Darlington, SC Harold Brasington, a believer in the newly created NASCAR, built the 1.25-mile Darlington Raceway in 1949 on an old cotton field on the westside of Darlington.
On Labor Day 1950, the track opened to a crows of more than 25,000 fans, who watched Johnny Mantz win the opener. Over the next half century Buddy Baker, Tim Flock, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt would all become winners on the track that became known as
